Born in 1964 in Vienna (Austria), he is a filmmaker, writer and curator. His first film, ‘Henry Fonda for President’ (2024), premiered at the Berlinale and has received several awards, including the ‘Time of History’ Special Award at Seminci 69. He is the former director of the Vienna International Film Festival (1992-97) and the Austrian Film Museum (2002-2017), and has curated the film program at Documenta 12 (2007) in Kassel. He has published numerous books on subjects such as film curatorship, 1960s and 70s American cinema, avant-garde film, Josef von Sternberg, Ruth Beckermann, among others, and edited the German re-issue of Amos Vogel’s ‘Film as a Subversive Art’.
