On Tuesday 21 October, the Calderón Theatre in Valladolid will host the recording of a special programme of “Versión Española”, the RTVE programme dedicated to Spanish cinema presented by Cayetana Guillén Cuervo. The day will include the screening of the feature film Something Is About to Happen and a Q&A with director Antonio Méndez Esparza and actress Malena Alterio.

Admission to the event, organised as part of the Valladolid International Film Festival (SEMINCI), will be free of charge upon downloading an invitation from the festival’s official website starting on 17 October. Doors will open at 15:30 and the screening will begin fifteen minutes later. After the film and a short technical break, the film discussion will then be recorded between 18:30 and 20:00.

A story of dignity and reinvention

Something Is About to Happen, the fourth feature film by Antonio Méndez Esparza (Life & Nothing More), tells the story of Lucía, a computer programmer who loses her job after more than two decades working for a chain of dental clinics. Unjustly accused of fraud, the protagonist decides to make a radical change in her life by becoming a taxi driver in Madrid, while caring for her elderly and sick father.

As she roams the streets of the capital in search of love and new adventures, Lucía embarks on a vendetta against those who stole her own story. The film, based on the novel of the same name by Juan José Millás, blends the social with the psychological in a narrative that moves between drama, comedy and thriller.

Unanimous recognition for Malena Alterio

The film, released in 2023, earned Malena Alterio the Goya for Best Actress, as well as the Forqué, Feroz and Actors’ Union awards for her performance. The script, written by Méndez Esparza himself together with Clara Roquet (director of Libertad and screenwriter of The Red Virgin), constructs a story about dignity and female resistance in contemporary society. The cast is completed by José Luis Torrijo, Manuel de Blas, Rodrigo Poisón and Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, accompanied by the soundtrack composed by Zeltia Montes.
