Brazil, 1778. Diogo de Castro, a Portuguese astronomer, naturalist, and cartographer, is sent by the Portuguese Crown from Coimbra to the Brazilian jungle to conduct a topographic survey of the Pantanal region and delimit the border between the colonies and the Spanish Empire. As he ventures deeper into the continent, disputes between the indigenous people and the conquistadors intensify, and Diogo soon finds himself embroiled in a struggle for survival that will shatter his idealized and inclusive vision of the New World.
