In 1973, the Brookside miners in Kentucky (Harlan County) decided to join the UMWA union. The management refused to sign the collective bargaining agreement, and the miners began a strike that lasted thirteen months. Demonstrations, clashes with police and strikebreakers, arrests, lawsuits, and women taking part in the struggle... One miner died, and the conflict ended, provisionally, with a first victory.
