The Indies, 16th century. Santiago, a Dominican friar, arrives from Spain determined to change the world, but it is the New World that ultimately changes him... Forced by his superiors, he participates as a chaplain in the cruel conquest expedition. Pushed to the limits of his convictions, he dares to desert, accompanying a rebel group who are fleeing with a gold loot wrested by blood and fire. But an unexpected turn of events will force him to live as one of the Caribs, putting to the test his religious beliefs, his morals, and even his sanity.
Luis Alberto Lamata
Born in Caracas, Venezuela, in 1959, he studied History at the Central University of Venezuela and has worked as a director, screenwriter, and producer in film and television since 1982. He made his film debut in 1990 with ‘Jericho’, which was nominated for a Goya Award. His filmography includes eight other feature films, among them ‘Nude with Oranges’ (1995), which have earned him awards in Havana, Biarritz, Cartagena, Sochi, and Trieste, and selections at film festivals in Berlin, San Sebastian, Sundance, and Montreal. In Venezuela, he has won the National Culture Award, the Municipal Award, the Critics' Award, and the Film Authors' Award. With more than fifty television titles, he has worked on miniseries, feature films, and internationally acclaimed telenovelas such as ‘Topacio’ (1986), ‘Cristal’ (1986), and ‘Señora’. (1988).
