Jerónimo de Ávila is the son of a Spanish conqueror and an Indian princess. A half-breed without inheritance, he has fought for many years in the European wars and has returned to Peru in 1618 seeking to have his name, his legitimacy and his property recognized. In Lima he finds himself driven into conspiracies and quarrels and ends as an outlaw, not only of colonial justice but of the ecclesiastical Court for the Extirpation of Idolatry. As he tries to find his Indian mother, he meets Inés Vargas, a novice who hides her true and forbidden calling: writing poems.
