Weaving accounts of rural workers and field notes of a couple of archaeologists, amateur footage and scientific drawings, legends, poems and songs, ‘The Seasons’ is a journey through the real history and the tales of a region in southern Portugal, Alentejo, and a portrait of the people who have lived there.
Maureen Fazendeiro
Film director and screenwriter born in 1989 in Créteil (France). She lives and works in Lisbon. She studied literature, art and cinema at the Université Denis Diderot in Paris.Her first film, the medium-length ‘Motu Maeva’ (2014), premiered at FIDMarseille and won awards at several festivals (DocLisboa, Valdivia, Brive, Play-Doc). This film and her other shorts, ‘Sol Negro’ (2019, TIFF Wavelength) and ‘Les Habitants’ (2025, Cinéma du Réel), have been screened in festivals worldwide, including at Viennale, Mar del Plata, Jeonju, New Director’s New Films, FICUNAM, Belfort, Angers, Gijón and Seminci, and have also been screened in cinematheques and museums such as FIAC Paris, Biennale de Veneza, Aichi Triennale, Palais de Tokyo and MoMA. She divides her time between individual projects and collaborations with Miguel Gomes as casting director and screenwriter (‘Grand Tour’, Best Director at Cannes 2024). Together, they co-directed ‘The Tsugua Diaries’ (Director’s Fortnight 2021). In 2025, Curtas Vila do Conde dedicated a focus about her work in the New Voices section, and her first feature-length documentary, ‘The Seasons’ premiered in competition at Locarno.
