"A happy person doesn't become a badminton player." That was Diego San José’s starting premise in writing 'Jakarta,' an original Movistar Plus+ series. "After having made a series on the Spanish Tax Agency ['Celeste,' starring Carmen Machi], it seemed almost impossible to find an even duller world for a new story. But I remembered that there are such things as regional badminton tournaments, which are played in ugly sports facilities without fans in the stands," explains the creator and executive producer of the series, who co-wrote 'Jakarta' with Daniel Castro and Fernando Delgado-Hierro. For San José, 'Jakarta' is a story that "shines a light on that bland, unglamorous Spain where nothing special ever happens," as for example in provincial cities that are all the same, like his native Irún. "This series is our tribute to all those people who are losers even when they win," he emphasizes. Starring Javier Cámara and the young Carla Quílez, 'Jakarta' is the first collaboration between creator and executive producer Diego San José, actor Javier Cámara, and director Elena Trapé, who co-directs one of the six episodes with Javier Cámara, as well as with Fernando Delgado-Hierro. After her feature film debut with 'Blog' (2010), Trapé's career took off with the three Biznaga Awards she won at the Malaga Film Festival for 'The Distances', including the Gold prize for Best Film. She has also directed 'The Enchanted' (2023, Silver Biznaga for Best Screenplay), episodes of the series 'Rapa', 'Elite', 'HIT', and 'I, Addict', and the series 'Celeste'.
