Tras iniciarse como novelista, Ousmane Sembène alcanzó reconocimiento internacional a través del cine, en el que encontró una poderosa herramienta política de resistencia y denuncia de las injusticias sufridas por sus compatriotas senegaleses. Mandabi (Premio Internacional de la Crítica en el Festival de Venecia) marcó así un hito al convertirse en el primer largometraje filmado en una lengua africana (wolof) producido en África Occidental, abordando cuestiones esenciales de la identidad poscolonial y las relaciones de clase y raza mediadas por la mecánica capitalista. La película, que adapta la novela “Le Mandat” del propio Sembène, narra la historia de Ibrahima Dieng, un padre de familia cuya vida se ve trastocada a causa de un giro postal de un familiar de París que accidentalmente lo empujará a un enfrentamiento con la burocracia corrupta senegalesa. Esta nueva restauración nos permite revistar una obra esencial en la historia del cine africano, una representación amargamente irónica de una sociedad atravesada por la pobreza, las contradicciones y las cicatrices del pasado.

Considered the "father of African cinema" and a key figure in the cultural awakening of post-colonial Africa, he was born in 1923 in Ziguinchor, Senegal, and died in 2007 in Dakar. Self-taught, he published the novel ‘Le Docker noir’ (1956) and trained as a filmmaker at the Gorky Studios in Moscow. His first feature film, ‘Black Woman’ (1966), won the Jean Vigo Prize, and ‘The Money Order’ (1969) competed for the Golden Spike in Valladolid. His films ‘God of Thunder’" (1972) and "Outsiders" (1977) won awards in Berlin, and ‘Impotence’ (1977) bagged the Grand Jury Prize at Karlovy Vary. The Moscow Film Festival awarded him its Honorary Prize in 1979 for his contribution to cinema, and the San Francisco Film Festival presented him with the Akira Kurosawa Award in 1993 for his lifetime achievement. Furthermore, with 'The Camp at Thiaroye' (1988) he won up to five awards in Venice, where he was also later recognized for 'Guelwaar' (1992), while 'Moolaadé (2004) won two awards in the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival, which a year later awarded him the Golden Coach.
