From the mid-1920s until the Civil War, a generation of writers, critics, and journalists made cinema a fundamental expression of Spanish modernity. In Children of ‘27: The Film Writers of the Generation of the Republic, Fernando Lara, director of SEMINCI from 1984 to 2004, traces the contributions of those who spearheaded that cultural awakening, particularly during the transition from silent to sound film.
Juan Piqueras, María Luz Morales, and Mateo Santos are among the names of a generation whose careers were later marked by repression, exile, and oblivion. Contemporaries of the poets of ‘27 and the Sinsombrero group, they shared the drive to bring Spanish culture closer to the European avant-garde. Published by Saco Roto, the book will be presented at a special session of the Memory and Utopia section, accompanied by films by Luis Buñuel and Ernesto Giménez Caballero. This is an opportunity to restore to these authors the place they occupied in the development of Spanish film culture.
