Coinciding with the screening of Lancelot du Lac at the 71st Seminci, DAMA presents Robert Bresson. Pasión por la exactitud, by semiotician and film historian Santos Zunzunegui. Published in collaboration with ECAM, the book begins with a fundamental question: what makes Bresson’s films such a distinctive aesthetic experience? In response, Zunzunegui identifies and organises the elements that shape Bresson’s stylistic system, focusing on his cinematic poetics while moving away from spiritualist readings of his work. Through an analysis of his thirteen feature films and sole short, supported by more than 350 frame captures, he shows how formal choices construct meaning and how that meaning evolves over the course of Bresson’s career. An invitation to approach a filmmaker of whom Éric Rohmer once memorably said: “Bresson is not a master; he is an example.”
