After overcoming the 60th edition with notable success, in terms of reviews for the contents and the increase in spectators (we reached almost 90,000 spectators in 8 days), it is now time, in 2016, to take advantage of the great momentum that the celebration of the 60th anniversary has brought us, with a great public and media impact (10 million returns), and which places us as the undisputed second festival in Spain.
A position that was corroborated in February by the Observatorio de la Cultura de España (a prestigious foundation that every year carries out surveys to find out which are the most loved and respected Spanish cultural entities), which placed SEMINCI in 26th place. A list in which only the San Sebastian Film Festival appears (in the top 15).
In the 61st edition, which will be held between 22 and 29 2016, the challenge is to show that SEMINCI is a growing festival, in permanent renewal (something that is already a sign of identity), with new and renewed sections and content, with an audience that continues to grow (10.3% more than in 2015) and which has reached its ceiling of 88,000 spectators in cinemas.
A festival that we want to continue to be a reference in Spain for the best auteur cinema in the world (without ever forgetting that of our country) and that must continue to discover, support and reward a new generation of directors from the 5 continents, as was demonstrated in the 60th edition when the Golden and Silver Spikes were awarded to 2 films by new directors from Iceland, France and Turkey, which represented their countries in the nominations for the 2015 Oscars.
This new edition is, in that sense, a new opportunity to continue convincing new audiences, especially the youngest (in 2015 we seated more than 16,000 schoolchildren from Valladolid and Castilla y León in cinemas), that SEMINCI is a festival to be connected to and to come to in order to see the most current cinema; a cinema that is different, committed and closely linked to the society that surrounds us (and worries us) and its vicissitudes.
