On December 23, 2015, Spain’s Ministry of Finance published its first ‘List of defaulters’. At number 1 there was a complete stranger: Agapito García Sánchez. This is his story ... and that of a whole country. The documentary reveals García Sánchez as a modern version of the protagonist of Kafka’s ‘The Trial’: a citizen facing the tyranny of the state machinery and its administration. This case provides the background for a detailed analysis of the alarming decline of citizen guarantees.
He was born in Seville in 1984. He began as a director and producer with his short film ‘La higuera’ (2010), selected in some thirty international festivals. Later he directed and produced documentaries such as ‘La vida a 5 nudos, a bordo del J.S. de Elcano’ (2015), shot for Telemadrid and premiered at the Malaga Festival, or ‘Señores de las redes’ (2017), about fishermen in the North Atlantic. In 2018 he premiered his controversial first fiction feature film, ‘Diana’ at the Malaga Film Festival and at Le Festival des Films du Monde de Montreal. The film also screened at Seminci, within the Spanish Cinema section. He is also a regular contributor to the film review TV programe ‘Días de cine’ broadcast on TVE’s La 2, where he has worked as an editor since 2006.
