In the 16th century, an epidemic breaks out and the outlawed Jews are blamed for it. The Carvajals are brought before the Inquisition. All renounce their faith except Luis, who is punished by being forced to wear a sambenito (a penitential robe) and work in an insane asylum. Under torture, Luis betrays his entire community, who are burned at the stake. While they burn, other Jews celebrate their rites.
