Seminci publishes the books ‘A viva voz. Juan Antonio Bardem de la A a la Z’ and ‘Pier Paolo Pasolini. El grito que no cesa’, and reissues ‘El poderoso influjo de Jamón, jamón’ (The Powerful Influence of Ham, Ham)

The festival will also host the presentation of a re-edition of ‘José Luis López Vázquez. Los disfraces de la melancolía’, by Eduardo Rodríguez Merchán, originally published in 1989

The 67th edition of the Valladolid International Film Week is publishing the book A viva voz. Juan Antonio Bardem from A to Z, an investigation financed by the Film Academy, carried out over two years by the filmmaker’s daughter, María Bardem, the writer Jorge Castillejo and the scriptwriter Diego Sabanés. The title brings together, in the format of a dictionary, a selection of statements in the first person by Juan Antonio Bardem, in which he reflects on cinema as a language, the creative processes of his films and the evolution of the audiovisual medium in Spain. The content, compiled from working papers kept by the family and archives from newspaper archives in eight countries, is accompanied by graphic documents such as filming photographs, story-boards, letters and other unpublished material. The authors will present this work in the Sala Delibes of the Teatro Calderón on Sunday 23 October at 17:30.

The festival’s catalogue of publications also includes the essay ‘Pier Paolo Pasolini. El grito que no cesa’, coordinated by Carlos F. Heredero and the magazine Caimán Cuadernos de Cine, which deals with the life and career of the Italian director Pier Paolo Pasolini, a fundamental figure of European cinema in the 20th century, to whom the 67th Seminci pays tribute on his centenary.

The third of the publications that Seminci presents this year is a reprint of the book ‘El poderoso influjo de Jamón, jamón’, written in 2007 by the director of the festival, Javier Angulo Barturen, who has ceded the rights for this relaunch. The copy, illustrated with photos of the filming taken by the director and screenwriter Bigas Luna, describes what happened on the set of the film Jamón, Jamón with testimonies from the protagonists.

These three publications will be added to the traditional Catalogue, which contains all the information on the 67th Valladolid International Film Week, in both Spanish and English. The Catalogue includes a bilingual list of all the titles selected in each of the festival’s sections, both the competitive sections and the cycles, tributes and other screenings, as well as information on the honorees and the members of all the juries.

Other publications

As part of the parallel activities, on Tuesday 25 October at 14:00 the Espacio Ribera will host the presentation of a book in memory of the actor José Luis López Vázquez (1922-2009), whose centenary is also being celebrated this year. The book is a reprint, by Ediciones Asimétricas, of the publication launched by the festival in 1989 on the occasion of the cycle dedicated to the actor, and its author is Eduardo Rodríguez Merchán, then head of the festival’s press office.

The book, entitled ‘José Luis López Vázquez. Los disfraces de la melancolía‘ , traces the career of the actor with almost three hundred roles in the world of cinema, theatre and television, from the perspective and anecdotes of its protagonist and the historical moment he lived through. More than thirty years after its publication, the issue recovers and updates the interview and study that the film historian and critic Eduardo Rodríguez Merchán dedicated to the Madrid-born filmmaker in 1989, with the aim of paying tribute to his career. The result of conversations that gave rise to a very personal biography that is now expanded with an additional chapter made up of documents and writings left as a legacy by the performer of titles such as Plácido (1961), Atraco a las tres (1962), El verdugo (1963), La cabina (1972) and Mi querida señorita (1972). The 256-page work has been revised and expanded by the researcher and writer Alba Gómez García.
