In times of difficulties and uncertainties, we want more than ever to vindicate the role of festivals as a privileged platform for the exhibition of a different kind of cinema, a large part of which rarely reaches commercial cinemas by their own means. Difficult, special, rare, small but important films that we have discovered during the year around the world and that we love because they have an impact on us, they shake us up, they overwhelm us, anything but leave us indifferent. The chances of catapulting them to fame and perhaps commercial success depend on festivals like this one and on you, on your support.
And today, more than ever, we insist on the defence of auteur cinema. And what do we mean by auteur cinema? It is clear that it has some specificities, which are neither strict nor exclusive. For example, for the director to be, at the same time, the scriptwriter or author of the original idea. Basically, it would be about films shot outside of the big studios (although there may be some exceptions), big budgets and million-dollar promotion and marketing campaigns. Films that do not require special visual or sound effects (at least the indispensable ones). Films with the ambition to innovate in the technical aspects and to escape from the common places in their plot. Films that not only seek to amuse or entertain, but that are capable of making us meditate, laugh and/or cry, move us, outrage us, stir our senses and provoke our feelings. And, if possible, filmed and projected in 35 millimetres.
We would like you to find a summary of all of the above in the selection we have prepared for you this year after watching more than 1,000 films, including feature films and shorts.
We thank our SEMINCI audience for forcing us every year to be faithful to the tradition of this festival, based on rigour, variety, seriousness and a commitment to the new and risky. In this sense, you will find in the official sections a good number of first and second films full of merits to be remembered and to make their directors great.
Enjoy yourselves!
