Independent and auteur cinema is consolidating itself day by day as the most important witness and showcase of a troubled world in which struggles for political and economic power, cases of corruption, ethnic, religious and social conflicts, while humanitarian and environmental catastrophes are on the rise. In this desolate panorama, there are always beautiful stories of anonymous heroes, moving actions of collectives, almost always born losers, full of generosity and dignity, which make us still believe in human beings.
All this uncomfortable and unglamorous panorama is the essence of a type of cinema that we love and program at SEMINCI. A cinema capable of telling us first-hand, without embellishment or subterfuge, the struggle for the mere subsistence of millions of refugees and displaced people from wars sustained by the arms industry, the advances in the defence of the rights of women, minorities and marginalised groups, as well as the attempts to preserve nature and stop climate change.
An auteur cinema that shows us the unstoppable social transformations and the struggle for individual freedoms in less developed societies and in those dominated by dictatorial or religious regimes. A cinema that has never ceased to reflect on the innumerable aspects of love and disaffection, that delves deeply into human feelings and behaviour, and also into changes in family relationships and institutional models, and that has its sights set on the bleeding panorama of the difficult future of millions of young people, when, in theory, there are innumerable windows to the world offered by new technologies...
Well, these themes and others that surely interest you, excite you, confuse you, move you and make you laugh or cry, are all presented, with a different perspective, in the 70 feature films and 50 short films (fiction and documentaries) that we have programmed in the sections in competition for this 63rd edition.
A programme in which the American cinema of the 90s and the films shot in this century in Portugal, our guest country, are the protagonists in two retrospectives worthy of attention. An edition in which we are launching a Green Spike for the film that best reflects the fight for the preservation of our threatened environment.
And always with an obsession for new audiences. Children and young people will once again be the protagonists of the SEMINCI, occupying the city's cinemas and theatres every morning to see a special programme for them, far removed from the films they usually see. We want to inoculate them with the love of auteur cinema seen on the big screen, with impressive sound and consumed with friends and colleagues around them. All of them will be accomplices of a social, cultural and entertainment event that is priceless.
Welcome to this great festival of auteur cinema that is the SEMINCI!
