‘Hamnet’ tells the powerful story of love and loss that inspired the creation of Shakespeare’s timeless masterpiece, ‘Hamlet’.
Screenwriter, director and producer born in Beijing, she attended secondary school in London and studied Political Science at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts and Film Production at New York University. Her short film ‘Daughters’ (2010) won an award at the Palm Springs Film Festival and in 2015 she premiered ‘Songs My Brothers Taught Me’, her debut feature film, at Sundance before participating in the Cannes Film Festival’s Directors’ Fortnight, where she returned in 2017 with ‘The Rider’, which won the CICAE Award there and later scooped the Silver Spike at Seminci, the Pilar Miró Award for Best New Director and the Best Actor Award. In 2020, she released ‘Nomadland’, which won the Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director, as well as being nominated for Best Screenplay and Best Film Editing. After directing ‘Eternals’ (2021) for Marvel, her latest feature film to date, ‘Hamnet’ (2025), won the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto Film Festival.
