In the 21st century, we are now facing the 60th anniversary of SEMINCI; a festival born at the beginning of the second half of the 20th century, specifically in 1956. 60 years is a world. Six decades in which we have gone from Cinemascope to the current High Definition, from frontal or stereophonic sound to surround sound, from large theatres to multiplexes.
Six decades in which the traditional windows of exploitation of films have been pulverised by the internet and piracy; in which cinema ceased to be a social act to become an almost solitary or home act; a cinema that has gone from rudimentary means to 3D and other technological systems capable of making possible all the dreams of scriptwriters and directors... In other words, a world!
The only thing that has changed relatively little auteur or artistic. A type of film made by a director, almost always a scriptwriter, with a particular, very personal vision of the world around us and of reality. A cinema made of close, credible stories, without concessions or shortcuts, capable of appealing to our feelings and moving the spectator. And this is because feelings and reality work independently of technology, marketing and advertising. This different type of cinema, far from the big commercial circuits (and whose birth historians place in the late 50's), has been perhaps the most important sign of identity of SEMINCI and one that we do not want to give up.
And to celebrate its 60th anniversary, we thought it appropriate to look back to the past to proudly contemplate what we were, what we have meant and still mean for auteur cinema in Spain and the world, highlighting directors who debuted at SEMINCI (and won prizes) and are now established international figures. An example of this are the 14 female directors who coincide in the SEMINCI retrospective. A SINGULAR FEMININITY.
But we did not forget to look to the future and for this we designed INÉDITOS. TALENTS OF THE 21ST CENTURY: films not seen in Spain by a dozen directors under 50 years old who are now part of the cinematographic avant-garde. All this plus an offer full of films by established and new directors that we hope you will enjoy in 8 days full of cinema.
Enjoy it!
