Meritxell Colell Aparicio

International Jury

Born in Barcelona in 1983, she graduated in Audiovi- sual Communication from Pompeu Fabra University in 2006. She received a scholarship to study at the Uni- versidad del Cine (FUC) in Buenos Aires and in 2005 directed her first film, ‘Manuscrito a la ciudad’.

She has been a member of the Cinema en curs team, a film pedagogy project run by the association A Bao A Qu, and as an editor she has worked on fifteen feature films selected at festivals such as the Berlinale, Mar del Plata and IDFA.

After directing several short films, in 2018 she signed her first fiction feature film ‘Con el viento’, which was selected for participation in El Atelier de la Cinéfonda- tion at the Cannes Film Festival 2015 and had its world premiere at the Berlinale, before winning the Silver Biz- naga for best film in Zonazine at the Malaga Festival.

In 2020, she premiered ‘Transoceánicas’ at the Nara Festival (Japan), a filmed correspondence with director Lucía Vassallo exchanged between Barcelona and Buenos Aires which received a special mention at the Gijón Festival. Her second fiction feature, ‘Dúo’, won numerous awards for projects in progress (at Malaga, San Sebastian, Sofia, Rome, L’Alternativa and Ventana Sur), before winning the award for best director in the ZonaZine section of the Malaga Festival.

In 2022 she was selected for the Berlinale Talents programme and premiered ‘La ciutat a la vora’, a film for the CCCB as part of the ‘Simfonies de ciutat’ programme. In 2023, together with Jordi Morató, she made the documentary ‘Miró íntim’, and she is currently developing her third feature-length fiction film, ‘Lejos de los árboles’, together with the sound artist Angélica Castelló. The project has been selec- ted for Ventana Sur ‘Proyecta’, MIA Market Rome, MECAS and the prestigious Ikusmira Berriak resi- dency (San Sebastian).
