Tired of superficial relationships and of being pursued by women, a young doctor and jazz musician, meets an enigmatic young woman one night in Warsaw. They spend the night together and embark on a game of pretence, flirtation and emotional detachment. At dawn, she disappears for a moment and does not return, prompting the protagonist to set out on an obsessive search for her throughout the city.
