CULTURAL PROGRAMME COORDINATOR AND MANAGER – MALAYSIA–UNITED STATES

New York-based film curator and writer, born in Malaysia in 1973. He has been the Artistic Di- rector of the New York Film Festival since 2020. From 2013 to 2022, he was the year-round Director of Programming at the NYFF’s parent organization, Film at Lincoln Center, where he co-chaired the New Directors/New Films selec- tion committee, co-founded the Art of the Real festival, and organized numerous retrospectives on Jane Campion, George Cukor, Raúl Ruiz, Agnès Varda and John Waters, among others.

He was the founder of Moving Image Source, an online magazine from the Museum of the Moving Image. He is the author of two books: ‘Tale of Cinema’ (2022), a monograph on the Korean filmmaker Hong Sangsoo now in its se- cond edition, and ‘The Man from Another Place’ (2015), a critical biography of David Lynch that has been translated into three languages, including Spanish.

He has written for Artforum, Criterion, Film Comment, The New York Review of Books, The Los Angeles Times, Cinema Scope, The New York Times, and The New Yorker, among other publications, and he has taught film studies at Harvard and art criticism at New York Univer- sity. He is also a member of the National Society of Film Critics of the United States and has been a programmer and jury member for numerous international festivals, including San Sebastian, Vancouver, Tribeca, Seoul Digital and South by Southwest. In 2018 he was named a Knight in the Order of Arts and Letters by the French Ministry of Culture.
