In these days when the imported idea that Culture (with a capital letter) is for those who pay for it or can afford it is beginning to gain ground, we vindicate, more than ever, the principle that Culture is a public good and a service to the citizen, which political and economic powers should ensure. Culture was, and should continue to be, part of the Welfare State, which we developed countries gave ourselves after the Second World War and which also includes the right to education and healthcare for all.
Today this Welfare State is broken and is in danger of disappearing if Culture does not offer us, through art, that basic nourishment to make our daily lives more bearable, enjoyable and richer.
Cinema is that part of art and culture that has nourished entire generations of Europeans and Spaniards and has allowed us to better understand the social and technological changes that have taken place in a single century. Cinema films have allowed us to see dreams, longings, doubts and frustrations reflected on the screen and, therefore, to feel the same as many citizens of the world. Cinema is an artistic asset to be protected by states because, in addition to art and business, it is a reflection of a way of thinking and feeling of a people and a showcase of their cultural identity.
The difficult situation of Spanish cinema, with consumption in cinemas falling and production diminished by the technological revolution, piracy and the abusive 21% VAT, makes its future very difficult. It is the responsibility of those who govern not to let an industry that until a few years ago 150,000 people in Spain made a living from directly or indirectly, and which made many of us proud of our country and our culture, go under. And now that we are determined to promote Spain's brand around the world, let us not forget that the audiovisual industry is the one that enjoys the greatest visibility.
I hope that the selection of films we have made for this 59th edition will move you to continue loving cinema, especially auteur cinema, and defending its influence as a Seventh Art and as a showcase for identities and cultures from all over the world. Please fill the cinemas of Valladolid!!! that will be the best contribution to the defence of cinema and of this festival.
