Founded in 1994 and affiliated with the University of Barcelona, ESCAC (Escola Superior de Cinema i Audiovisuals de Catalunya) has more than 30 years of experience training more than 8,000 professionals who now work in the global film, television and digital platform industries. Recognised by The Hollywood Reporter as one of the 15 best film schools in the world, ESCAC offers an Official Degree in Cinematography, four official master's degrees, various postgraduate programmes, and a summer school for pre-university students.
The school bases its methodology on practical and cross-disciplinary education, with specialisations in directing, production, screenwriting, editing, photography, sound, art direction and documentary filmmaking. Its 30,000 m² urban campus replicates a professional studio and encourages creativity and collaboration. ESCAC's international community includes students from more than 60 countries and an active network of alumni who collaborate on professional projects even after graduation, such as J. A. Bayona, Kike Maíllo, Mar Coll, Patricia Font and Javier Ruiz Caldera.
Its international impact is reflected in more than 500 national and international awards, including 36 Goya Awards, 67 Gaudí Awards and recognitions at festivals such as the Cannes Film Festival, Berlinale and Sundance Film Festival. Initiatives such as CineBase bring audiovisual storytelling to schools and young people, fostering talent from the ground up, while Ópera Prima fosters first feature films and series from emerging authors with more than 60 awards and 100 selections at international festivals.
ESCAC also leads innovative projects such as The Dream Makers, a short film competition supported by CUPRA and J. A. Bayona, the Barcelona Arts Summer School (BASS), which brings together more than 150 young artists from 28 countries in an interdisciplinary creative laboratory, and the OFF Escac programme, the trade school that has trained more than 7,000 students in audiovisual skills throughout Spain.
ESCAC has not only innovated in film training, but also seeks, shapes and promotes talent, creating a vibrant community that transforms stories into world-renowned productions.
