It is the 1990s on the Costa da Morte. Young Nico often goes out to poach barnacles with her father, Tano, a heroin survivor who shares some of the proceeds with her. Sometimes Nico loses consciousness. A strange noise invades her mind, everything goes black and she faints. She then wakes up somewhere else, with no memory of how she got there. As she delves into those depths, Nico will discover that the absences which initially overwhelmed her hold a potential that will allow her to feel stronger and less alone.
Sandra Sánchez
Born in Narón in 1970, she has built up an extensive career in Galicia as an editor and director, working on both fiction and documentary projects. After directing short films such as ‘A repesca’ (1995) and documentaries such as ‘Aguiño, sobrevivir al Prestige’ (2003) and ‘Sueños desde el abismo’ (2006), in 2011 she premiered ‘Tralas luces’ at the San Sebastian Film Festival, in the New Directors section. This was her first feature film and her most personal work to date, in which she took on the roles of director, screenwriter, cinematographer and editor. The film won the Mestre Mateo Awards for Best Documentary Film, Best Director and Best Editing, and received a special mention from the jury at the Galician Critics’ Awards. She subsequently directed the short films ‘Matías’ (2016), made as part of the Chanfaina Lab II filmmakers’ workshop, and ‘A nena azul’ (2018, winner of the Mestre Mateo Award for Best Short Film), the latter starring Sira, the same character around whom ‘The Swimmer’ (2026), her new feature film, revolves.
