In the quiet fog of the Bekaa Valley, on the border between Lebanon and Syria, someone sets fire to a truck. In this tightly woven Bedouin community, Gamra is gone, maybe hiding - maybe running. As her cousin Yasser sets out to find her, he runs over a man from a rival tribe. His sisters Rim and Jawaher are chosen to walk into the night as an offering. Will their sacrifice be enough to preserve the fragile balance, or will this burning flame spread through the entire village?
Rakan Mayasi
Independent filmmaker from Palestine, born in 1985 in Germany and currently based in Brussels. He studied Cinema and Psychology in Lebanon and then received film training with Abbas Kiarostami in South Korea at the Asian Film Academy and with Béla Tarr in Budapest. He has an MA in Filmmaking from LUCA School of Arts in Belgium. His filmography includes short films such as ‘Sea Sonata’ (2010); ‘Roubama’ (2012), selected for Locarno; ‘Bonboné’ (2017), which competed at Berlin and Toronto; ‘Trumpets in the Sky’ (2021), which won an award at Toronto; and ‘The Key’ (2023), which premiered at SXSW. Shot entirely with non-professional actors and without a script, his feature film debut, ‘Yesterday the Eye Didn’t Sleep’ (2026), competed at the Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section.
