Winter 1945, Germany. The Americans liberate prisoners from a concentration camp. The released prisoners are taken to a former SS barracks, but remain under guard, waiting for their situation to change from one day to the next. There are several thousand of them, and they look for ways to pass the time: some train, others pray, some steal and others simply wait. The atmosphere is tense: there is no shortage of arguments and quarrels; sometimes, tempers flare.
