Based on the literary work of Lion Feuchtwanger, director Konrad Wolf portrays the artist Goya as a man of contradictions, torn between loyalty to the Spanish Crown and a connection to the people, between marital fidelity and his passion for the Duchess of Alba. His fateful encounter with the singer Maria Rosario changes his life forever.
Konrad Wolf
A filmmaker born in 1925 in Hechingen, who epitomises East German cinema like few others. The son of the anti-fascist doctor and playwright Friedrich Wolf, his family went into exile in Moscow in the 1930s due to the growing threat of Nazism, and he did not return to his country until the end of the war, as a soldier in the Red Army – an experience that inspired his classic film 'I Was Nineteen' (1968).After the war, he studied at the renowned VGIK film school in Moscow and completed his studies with the film ‘Einmal ist keinmal’ (1955), having already joined the state-owned DEFA film studios in East Berlin. He went on to direct eleven more films, including the award-winning ‘Sterne’ (1959, Special Jury Prize at Cannes), ‘Professor Mamlock’ (1961, Golden Prize at Moscow International Film Festival) and ‘Goya’ (1971). En 1977 compitió en la Berlinale con ‘Mama, ich lebe’ y en 1980 ganó allí el premio Fipresci con ‘Solo Sunny’. He also served as the President of the East German Academy of the Arts from 1965 until his early death on 1982.
