The streets of a large city are littered with corpses, the result of a violent repression of a protest crushed by the police. A decree from the totalitarian regime orders that the bodies not be removed, under penalty of death. Citizens have grown eerily accustomed to the stench of death, but Antigone, determined, wants to give her brother a proper burial, although she finds no support from her family or her fiancé, the son of the prime minister. The only help comes from a mysterious stranger named Tiresia, a foreigner who joins her act of resistance.
Liliana Cavani
An Italian filmmaker born in Carpi in 1933. She began her career at RAI, where she directed documentaries such as ‘Storia del Terzo Reich’ (1962) and ‘La donna nella Resistenza’ (1965), and made her feature film debut with ‘Francis of Assisi’ (1966), which premiered at the Venice Film Festival before winning the Golden Labarum in Valladolid, marking the start of her career in Spanish cinema. In 1968, she competed at Venice with ‘Galileo’ (1968), before filming ‘The Year of the Cannibals’ (1968) and returning to the Valladolid Festival in 1972 to receive a special mention from the jury for ‘The Guest’. She achieved international fame in 1974 with ‘The Night Porter’, and her films have competed at festivals such as Cannes (‘Milarepa’, 1974; ‘The Skin’, 1981; and ‘Francesco’, 1989), the Berlinale (‘The Berlín Affair’, 1986) and Venice (‘The Guest’; ‘Where Are You? I'm Here’, 1993), where in 2023 she presented ‘The Order of Time’, her latest feature film, out of competition, and received the Golden Lion for her lifetime achievement.
