On New Year's Eve, 1899, Dóra and Lili—twins separated in infancy who have taken different paths ever since—arrive in Hungary just as the twentieth century begins. Dóra is a carefree swindler, while Lili is an anarchist. They step off the train at the same time but remain separated. Mr. Z is an eccentric aristocrat obsessed with the new technologies and inventions of the coming century. He gets to know both girls individually, and they blur together in his mind, collectively representing the Ideal Woman to him. However, inside a mirrored maze, he discovers that the woman he thought was one is actually two, and they instantly lose their glamour for him.
Ildikó Enyedi
Award-winning and Oscar nominated director, she started her career as a concept and media artist. Her first feature film, ‘My Twentieth Century’ (1989) won the Golden Camera for best debut in Cannes, while ‘Magic Hunter’ (1994) competed in Venice and was followed by ‘Tamas and Juli’ (1997; Venice special screening) and ‘Simon the Magician’ (1999; Locarno, special prize). After a long absence, while she made shorts and worked with HBO, she returned to feature films with ‘On Body and Soul’ (2017; Berlinale, Golden Bear / Oscar Nomination) and ‘The Story of My Wife’ (2021; Cannes Competition). ‘Silent Friend’ (2025), her latest work, premiered in competition at the Venice Film Festival, where Luna Wedler won the award for best young actress before the film won the Silver Spike and the Green Spike at Seminci.
