In the garden of a pension, Eva and her husband Josef meet with the lonesome, mysterious-looking Robert. During play, a key falls out of Robert's pocket, and when she tries to return it to him, she discovers in Robert's room a briefcase soiled with mud, and in it, a date-stamp. Soon afterwards, she learns that another victim of an unknown murderer of women has been found, with a number and date stamped on her forehead. Eva concludes that the murderer must be Robert, and when he reckons that Eva has revealed his identity, he tries to kill her.
Věra Chytilová
Born in 1929 and died in 2014, she was one of the most daring and influential filmmakers of the Czechoslovak New Wave. She trained at the Prague Film School (FAMU) under Otakar Vávra and was one of the first women to graduate in Film Direction. ‘Something Different'’ (1963), her debut feature, won the Grand Prix at the Mannheim-Heidelberg Film Festival and was in competition at Valladolid in 1967. ‘Daisies’ (1966), her second film, was censored by the regime but went on to become a classic of avant-garde cinema and feminist filmmaking. In 1970, she competed at Cannes with 'Fruit of Paradise' (1969), but following the 1968 invasion, the Soviet authorities banned her from directing again. After making ‘Game of the Apple’ in 1977, she competed at the Berlin Film Festival with ‘Wolf's Hole’ (1987) and in 1998 she won an award at the Venice Film Festival for ‘Traps’. In 2000, the Karlovy Vary Film Festival awarded her an honorary prize for her lifetime achievement, and a year later she received the Czech Lion of Honour from the Czech Film and Television Academy.
