Double Freedom

He was born in Buenos Aires (Argentina) in 1975. He studied for three years at the Universidad del Cine. After co-directing his first short film, ‘Dos en la vereda’ (1995), he worked as an assistant director and sound designer until 2000. His first feature film, ‘Freedom’, which focused on the relationship between a solitary woodcutter and his surroundings, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section. After setting up his own production company, 4L, he returned to Cannes in 2004 with ‘The Dead’, which premiered at the Directors’ Fortnight. Two years later, he completed his trilogy with ‘Fantasma’. In 2008, he turned increasingly towards fiction with ‘Liverpool’, which follows a young sailor searching for his mother through the remote villages of Tierra del Fuego. Five years later, ‘Land of Plenty’, set in 19th-century Denmark and Argentina, won the FIPRESCI Prize in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes, where he returned in 2023 to present ‘Eureka’ as part of Cannes Premiere – a triptych on colonial violence. In 2026, he presented ‘Double Freedom’ at the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight, marking a return, twenty-five years on, to the life of the woodcutter Misael, the protagonist of his first feature film.
