Mr. Nelson, Did You Kill People?

Born in 1960 in Tokyo. He got his first 8mm camera at the age of 14. He won the Grand Prize at the Pia Film Festival in 1987 for ‘The Adventure of Denchu Kozo’. He made his theatrical film debut with ‘Tetsuo the Iron Man’ (1989) and won the Grand Prize at the Roma International Fantastic Film Festival. His subsequent major works include ‘Tokyo Fist’ (1995), ‘Bullet Ballet’ (1998), ‘Gemini’ (1999), ‘A Snake of June’ (2002), which won the Special Jury Prize in the Controcorrente section (later renamed Orizzonti) at the Venice Festival, ‘Vital’ (2004), ‘Nightmare Detective’ (2006), ‘Kotoko’ (2011), the winner of the top prize in the Orizzonti competition. Furthermore, ‘Tetsuo: The Bullet Man’ (2009), ‘Fires on the Plain’ (2014) and ‘Killing’ (2018) were selected for the competition section at Venice, while his film ‘Shadow of Fire’ was entered into the Orizzonti competition. His work, which involves everything from directing, screenplay, photography and editing, has won numerous awards both domestically and internationally. In addition to acting in most of the films he directs, he frequently appears in works by other filmmakers, like Kentaro Otani, Martin Scorsese, Go Riju or Takashi Miike.
