Paris, 1928. A young painter in vogue, Antoine Balestro, has been unable to paint since his wife died, to the despair of his gallery owner, Armand. One drunken evening, Antoine tries to contact his wife through a psychic, but is actually speaking with Suzanne, a humble carnival worker who has sneaked in to steal food. Suzanne proves to be a gifted fraudster and, soon aided by Armand, stages fake séances. Little by little, Antoine regains his inspiration, but the situation grows increasingly complicated as Suzanne falls in love with the man she is manipulating.
Pierre Salvadori
French director, born in Tunisia in 1964. He took classes in theatre while studying cinema at university. After a short spell in cafe-theatre, he wrote his first script, ‘Wild Target’, which he directed several years later (1993), and was nominated for the César Award for Best First Feature Film. Influenced by Lubitsch, he pursued his exploration of sophisticated drama with ‘The Apprentices’ (1995) and ‘White Lies’ (1997). After a detour into film noir, with ‘The Sandmen’ (2000), he returned to drama and directed ‘After You...’ (2002) and then ‘Priceless’ (2006). In 2018, he won an award at the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight for ‘The Trouble with You’, which received nine César nominations, and in 2026 he opened the French film festival with ‘The Electric Kiss’.
